Each and every day our bodies are bombarded with toxins. From environmental chemicals, processed foods, cosmetics and even the biochemical reactions in our bodies cause free radical damage. We simply can not escape them. The good news is, detoxing doesn’t have to be about extreme methods of fasting or starvation to rid your body of these chemicals. Incorporating small-daily-habits into your life on a consistent basis can have huge positive impacts on your health.
What you do every day matters more than what you do every once in a while.
Following is a list I have compiled of my favourite yet simple ways you can begin to help your body detox on a daily basis. Some of them take a matter of seconds. Pick out a few that resonate with you or try them all. I personally practice a number of them in my morning routine each and every day.
1. Drink water upon rising
Drinking filtered water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach is one of the easiest and most effective ways to flush out and purify the body of toxins. During sleeping hours your body is busy rejuvenating itself, repairing cells and neutralizing and processing toxins. Starting your day off with quality, clean water helps to flush out this toxic waste, re-hydrates your body, and get your bowels moving. Add a squeeze of lemon, a dash of apple cider vinegar, a scoop of green powder or sea salt for added detox benefits.
2. Eat high fibre foods
High fibre foods sweep through the intestinal tract like a broom and draw out impurities. Keeping things flowing down there is extremely important to maintaining vibrant health and are essential in assisting the body to rid toxins. Chia seeds, psyllium husks, flax seeds, fruits, vegetables and legumes are all foods high in fibre. A congested colon is linked with headaches, fatigue, skin blemishes, poor digestion and many diseases.

.3. Invest in a tongue scraper
Tongue scraping is an ancient ayurvedic detoxification technique which removes bacteria, toxins, food debris, fungi, and dead cells from the surface of the tongue. It involves the simple act of scraping the tongue upon rising. It’s an extremely quick, simple and inexpensive practice. You can find tongue scrapers at most health food stores or online.
4. Oil pulling
Oil pulling is another ancient detox method. The practice involves swishing oil (coconut oil is commonly used) around the mouth, for 10-15mins and then spitting it out. As with tongue scraping, this practice is performed first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. The oil draws out impurities, unwanted bacteria and debris from the mouth and gums as well as helping to decongest and cleanse the lymph system.
5. Add a green juice or smoothie to your day
Kick start your day with a life-giving, nourishing green juice or smoothie. The green pigments in plants are high in chlorophyll, helping the body to purge itself of toxins. Mix and match greens such as celery, cucumber, kale, silverbeet and parsley with lemon, ginger and apple for a delicious cocktail that will help push out the garbage whilst flooding your body with the essential nutrients it craves. Here are more benefits to drinking green smoothies and my favourite green smoothie recipe.
6. Dry skin brushing
Dry skin brushing is an easy and effective tool to add to your daily detox routine. The skin, being the body’s largest detoxification organ can easily become congested. Dry skin brushing helps shed off dead skin cells, stimulates the lymphatic system and promotes circulation. It can reduce cellulite, unclog pores and helps the body to dislodge toxins. Using gentle, circular motions begin with your feet and work your way up brushing your legs, buttocks, back, stomach and arms working towards your heart.
7. Eat Clean
Compromising the bodies ability to perform optimally by consuming processed foods, refined sugars, alcohol and caffeine interferes with the natural detox process. Taking care of yourself is just as much about what you are avoiding and not eating. Choose organic or spray-free foods over conventionally grown to lessen the chemical load.
8. Hot and cold shower
Did you know that simply alternating between hot and cold temperatures whilst in the shower can actually help the body releases toxic waste from the lymphatic system and the liver? Although it may feel a little uncomfortable (for a second) cold water activates your immune system and stimulates circulation, boosting your bodies ability to detox. Pretty cool huh?
9. Sweat it out
Sweating releases toxins from the body and gets the lymphatic system moving. The lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump like the circulatory system does and therefore relies on YOU to get it pumping! Take a Bikram yoga class, use a sauna, get outdoors and run, skip or play. Whatever you do, break out a sweat doing it.
10. Take a bath
Fill up the tub and make yourself a beautiful cleansing bath. Add a cup of Epsom salts, baking soda, a detoxing clay, apple cider vinegar or some aromatic essential oils. Give yourself permission to relax and reap the benefits of a detox bath.
