Summer is my absolute favourite time of the year. I just adore it! It has me feeling energised, expanded, inspired and refreshed. I love the early morning rises, longer days, sun-bleached hair, home-made popsicles, summer rompers and the humid air that comes with this gorgeous time of year.
Here are some of my top wellness tips which will have you on your way to a healthier version of yourself this summer. For me, this is simply a way of life and you too can easily integrate these habits into your daily routine one step at a time.
1. Ditch the sunscreen (and get some natural sunlight)
This may startle you but did you know that conventional sunscreen is actually harmful? YES! Many sunscreens are in fact full of toxic substances. These chemicals not only have been associated with hormone disruption but have also been linked to an increased risk of cancer, including skin cancer! Hashtag: truth bomb!
Getting adequate (but sensible) unfiltered sunlight is absolutely vital to your overall health and well-being. Sunlight builds up the immune system, promotes vitamin D production, increases circulation, accelerates the healing of skin abrasions and bacterial conditions and the best part: it’s a natural antidepressant! Applying these chemical barriers between you and the sun interferes with these processes.
Whilst I personally don’t use sunscreen, I am very conscious of the time of day I get this sun vitamin and I have built up resistance slowly over time. If I do a need protection I will simply sit in the shade or cover up with a hat and light clothing. There are times, however, when the surf is pumping and the sun is blistering hot and I just have to get out there! I will apply an all natural sunscreen to my face which contains a mineral barrier (zinc oxide) as it’s active ingredient rather than toxic chemicals.
This is a BIG topic and I will post more about it in the future. I will leave you with this informative clip from Dr Axe as food for thought:
2. Stay hydrated (and buy a water filter)
Water, it’s such a simple concept that it often gets overlooked. One of the most important yet effortless habits you can incorporate into your day is to simply-drink-more-water. Consuming adequate amounts of water on a daily basis is crucial considering that up to 60% of the human body is in fact water. Getting enough H2O helps flush out toxins, relieves fatigue and improves the complexion of the skin, just to name a few.
Unfortunately, water is another source of chemical contamination, making an investment in a quality water filter a must. There are filters to suit every budget, from small countertop jugs to complete whole house systems. Simply start where you can.
Whilst this might be a bit much for some, one of my daily non-negotiables is starting my day with one whole litre of filtered water every morning. Yep, one litre and my body loves it! As I am moving through my morning routine I keep my water on me and sip it over time. I also make sure I carry a water bottle with me where ever I go to ensure I am staying hydrated.
3. Get up early
Summer is the perfect time to get into the habit of rising early. There is no temptation to stay snuggled up under the doona because it’s warm and light already! Starting your day off right sets the tone for the rest of your day.
Life is getting up an hour early to live an hour more
Here are some morning practices that you may like to integrate into your life.
- Exercise: yoga, a walk in nature, hit the gym.
- Personal reflection: keep a journal, goal setting.
- Relax: simply be with a cup of tea, meditate.
- Educate: read an inspiring book or listen to a podcast. Up For A Chat and A Quirky Journey are my favourites on health, wellbeing, relationships and mindset.
- Nourish: prepare a healthy breakfast or packed lunch
4. Store a jar of coconut oil in your bathroom
Keep your beauty regime clean and simple this summer with coconut oil. It makes for a fantastic all-around moisturiser that can be used from head to toe. Coconut oil is an effective makeup remover, soothing lip balm and hair conditioning treatment.
I like to add a few drops of my favourite essential oil to my coconut oil for a natural fragranced skin or hair treatment that leaves me feeling nourished and radiant.
5. Switch to a natural deodorant
Sadly, in this day and age, we are absolutely swamped with toxic chemicals in our environment, our food and in our skincare products. Swapping your deodorant is one of the easiest places to start when changing over to more sustainable, chemical-free products. There is no need to douse your pits with poison this summer when there are plenty of effective alternatives. Check out your local health food store for toxin-free options or make your own! It’s cheap, simple and effective. For a natural home-made deodorant recipe I have just the solution for you.
6. Get into nature (and walk barefoot)
Have you ever noticed how amazing it feels to have your feet in direct contact with the earth? Direct skin-to-earth contact conducts electrons to your body which have powerful effects on the body both physiologically and electromagnetically. Earthing, in fact, minimises the effect of potentially disruptive electromagnetic fields that we are today surrounded by.
Being in nature eases the mind, calms the nervous system, improves your overall vitality, inspires creativity and peps you up with feel-good-hormones. I encourage you to take some time out each day to throw off your shoes and get those feet-on-the-ground. Whether it be grass, dirt, sand or in water, being in nature will do wonders for your mind, body and soul.
